I survived the first week of Fall TV. Now that it feels like Fall I am enjoying it all.
Mondays are fine even if it's not blockbusters. CBS is weak comedy ending with weak action all for the elderly who enjoy weak. FOX is rolling with House (still, I guess there are many exotic diseases in this area) and Lonestar which was fine but not great ratings-wise. ABC has the unwatchable Dancing with the Stars and my favorite rehash of Murder She Wrote i.e. Castle. CW isn't for me but maybe the 'tweens still watch 90210 and Gossip Girl. NBC is a huge disappointment with its action line-up. Chuck was okay, Olivia Munn sighting! The Event was tough to chew through. Chase was empty, just dull. Weeds and The Big C are great, but you have to pay.
Tuesdays might be full of surprises. I am hopeful of ABC's No Ordinary Family while no to Dancing with the Stars recap and sorry I didn't get to watch Detroit 187 not that I tried. CBS and see if you catch the theme here just feels old with NCIS and almost NCIS and The Good Wife all essentially soap operas for baby boomers. CW, nope. FOX premiered Glee and I never saw it before, I'm watching the Britney Spears next week then out, and I take away that it's a special needs school where they teach lip-syncing? Then the two shows I was expecting to suck actually got me. Raising Hope is doomed because it is darkly hilarious, just the premise which I completely assumed was banal turned me on my ass. Running Wilde has no chance either because it doesn't seem to have the structure in story to last but seeing Keri Russell makes me sigh contentedly and I'll keep up with her. NBC keeps pumping out Biggest Loser but America continues to miss the irony and Parenthood seems well-done but I don't fit its audience. Syfy has shows I can miss.
Wednesdays is slow. ABC sit-coms from 8-9pm can go away while 9-10pm are supposedly awesome and The Whole Truth is way too self-righteous, btw did the daughter kill the girl in the first episode? CBS is a no go Survivor but I do like Criminal Minds and was happy with The Defenders which considering my lowered expectations wasn't bad. No to CW again and to FOX. NBC has an interesting idea in Undercovers but how many times to that well JJ, then two more hours of L&Os and more NBC irony with the idea of law and order in LA. South Park come back fast.
Thursdays is busy for now. No to ABC because My Generation was even worse than I imagined, Grey's is gray and Private Practice is just not going anywhere. CBS has The Big Bang Theory which started strong, then the travesty that is William Shatner and they follow up comedy with CSI (huh?) and end on The Mentalist which is somehow getting darker. No to CW, FOX rocks with Bones and Fringe. NBC comedy block is strong again from 8-10 and then follows with the unintentionally funny Apprentice work of D.Trump. Off the dial go see It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League on FX both are gross and funny.
Fridays are still totally up in the air. No to ABC, skipping Medium on CBS and CSI:NY but I do like Blue Bloods. Finally CW I can embrace you while Supernatural and Smallville continue to run. Fox is also strong with Human Target and The Good Guys. No to NBC and Sanctuary on Syfy. Then again you aren't supposed to be sitting at home watching TV on Friday night.
Saturday is football. I actually forgot Saturday Night Live was on last week.
Sunday is comedy cartoons on FOX and they are all delightfully sublime, not really but they are funny. ABC is not for me but the Housewives of Desperation in scripted TV as opposed to all those Real Housewives of shows and then Brothers & Sisters with the is he or isn't he of Rob Lowe's character. No to CBS but people love The Amazing Race and CSI:Miami. The Walking Dead replaces Mad Men on Halloween and I am geeked up for that. I wish Dexter would visit the set of Jonas and I am still on the fence with Boardwalk Empire. NFL football dominates NBC in case you didn't know.
So this is what I thought of the first week and in general about television.
Later,
